19: Interdisciplinary Studies in the Long Nineteenth Century

This article situates James Tissot's 1881 painting Goodbye, on the Mersey within his oeuvre and considers its contribution to late-nineteenth century depictions of the transatlantic exchange. The article argues that Goodbye, on the Mersey presents the transatlantic journey as a point of fracture between Old World and New as part of his broader artistic concern to portray the psychological fractures of modern (fin-de-siècle) life.
