Stardust, Modernity, and the Dickensian Brand
This essay considers the ways in which Dickens has been remembered at the bicentenary of his birth. The challenge for the organisers of Dickens 2012 events and exhibitions has been not only to determine the nature of Dickens’s appeal today, but also to rethink the nature of public commemoration. A central problem for them has been that Dickens has already been commemorated on a large scale — several times. This essay explores a new willingness in the heritage industry in 2012 to foreground Dickens’s modernity and celebrity, along with with more traditional facets of the Dickens ‘brand’.
